SLASH Columns, Your Voice Through Independent Journalism

My first few days at University College Groningen did not leave me with the impression that I would constantly challenge my understanding of certain topics through discourse with my classmates, my perspectives or understandings were often the same as the next. Frustration arose from what I feel is missing out on a crucial part of university. I was raised in a household that valorized my ability to swallow a new book before I grew another centimeter. I was told that reading does to you what water cannot and what oxygen wishes it could do — harvest critical and independent thinking.  Journalism works the same way.  Without independent journalism, no voice inspires us to criticize, to change the way things are, and no voice to help us see what we would otherwise miss. A topic left to rot under a single dominant point of view demonstrates why a diversity of perspectives could and should be promoted. Deserts

Deserts by David The Deserts so they told me Barren Wastelands of long forgotten beauty Sandy graves of conquerors past Moaning winds and melodies soothe me Assure me of rest to which we turn at last The deserts are not to be mistaken Quiet sands that shout the moans of the forsaken They are not dead for they breathe in tune In tune with all that aren’t easily shaken by the beating heart that lies beneath the dunes The deserts dance to music unperceived With mountains of bodies and corpses for feet notes played longer than a hundred years They dance together in the heat to celebrate their dying peers My eyes cant see, my ears cant hear but deserts they stay with me still It seem to be, it so appears the deserts songs fight with my will To join in dance Its clutching hands In endless fields Which nothing yield Roughest seas of widest land Gouging out your eyes with sand A tender hold of boiling heat An ageless being neath your feet Come join its rocks And stop the clock Walk and go And ...

I was a Castle

I was a Castle by David I can give you all the void that I have left The hole where I used to be you might find treasure in the ruins remnants that were part of me Its not your duty to rebuild what I was or even awe at whats now left and no matter how much I need you Ill let you leave if you think its best If you however still decide to pick up hammer, brick and mortar to build along me by my side and push yourself to going forward If you can manage to navigate me to get hurt by the dangers that I keep by words that fall from rotten beams and dragons that are still asleep If loving me is not too much and I am not to small for you If you decide to be with me there is nothing I wont do This was written on Valentines Day February 2024

Perspectives

Perspectives  by David The day I was born  rain poured frighteningly The day I died The Sun shone brightly Brighter than to any  of my living days Has god forsaken me to exist Has my being tortured him Or was it just that I was missed So happy to be welcomed home again
